Michael was the best surfer in Australia between 1972 and 1977 and won virtually every surfing contest in Australia in that time. He was the star of seminal surfing film Morning of the Earth and the winner of the first ever event of the modern world tour. An undiagnosed schizophrenic, Michael couldn't handle the fame his surfing powers attracted, and he retreated into a world of hard drugs and fast cars. He eventually hit rock bottom after a police chase, which took 15 cars to stop him. He never surfed again.
